Serine/threonine-protein kinase smg-1
Locus: CELE_C48B6.6
Wormbase description: smg-1 encodes a phosphatidylinositol kinase-related protein kinase; SMG-1 functions as a key component of the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway that identifies and degrades mRNAs that contain premature stop codons; in addition, and partially in parallel to DAF-2-insulin signaling, SMG-1 regulates adult lifespan and the response to oxidative stress; in vitro, SMG-1 is capable of phosphorylating SMG-2/UPF1, an RNA helicase whose activity is also required for NMD and with which SMG-1 coimmunoprecipitates from crude extracts.
